What Home Style Do You Prefer?

Whether you are building new construction or remodeling an existing home, knowing the style of house you are trying to achieve is important to develop a successful plan. There are many variations but some of the most popular home styles are listed below.

  1. Country French Style - Dating back to the 18th century, French building traditions started when France occupied much of eastern North America. Country French homes are often one story with many narrow windows and paired shutters, steeply pitched roofs, stucco walls.

  2. Colonial Style- Dating back to 1876, this style is one of the most popular in the states. Colonial style homes usually have 2-3 stories, fireplaces and brick or wood facades. Typically the kitchen and family rooms are on the first floor with all bedrooms on the upper levels.

  3. Victorian Style- Victorian era lasted from about 1860 to 1900. These homes are romantic and abundant in detail. The homes usually feature a steeply pitched roof, front-facing gable, patterned shingle, cutaway bay windows, asymmetrical facade with a partial or full front porch.

  4. Craftsman Style- This style of home was popular between 1905 and the 1930s and is making its comeback today. A distinct feature of this style is the large amount of interior woodwork such as built-in shelving and seating. On the exterior the homes often have low-pitched roofs with wide eave overhangs, exposed roof rafters, and decorative beams or braces under the gables.

  5. Mediterranean Style- Very popular in the state of Florida, Mediterranean style also known as the “Spanish Farmhouse” feature low-pitched red tile roof, arches, grillwork and stucco exteriors. The usual U-shape Mediterranean floor plan is oriented around a central courtyard.
